Groups: The Blackstars, The Mournery
Characters: Molescere
Locations:
Etron Aemon Valyr is a man of quiet ambition.
Born on the steps of The Mournery by a mother who would not survive and he would never know - his life has always been in service of the Mournery. The group fed and clothed him, and soon taught him as well. Like all the orphans of the Mournery, Etron learned the arts of preserving the dead, ancient necromancies passed down through scrolls and instruction.
He was a weak child, underweight as a baby and gangly as he matured. Bullied by the other orphans for his weakness and awkward demeanor, he was unable to fight back. He knew his strengths lied elsewhere. He excelled in the classroom, learning at a tremendous pace, years ahead of those equal his age. And the bullying increased.
His teacher quickly noticed the absenteeism of his classmate, Ilian. She was laid up in bed for near a week, under the effect of some arcane malaise. The fact that she was Etron’s primary bully, alongside Etron hiding a stash of missing spell tomes from the repository (found during the investigation into Ilian’s sickness), was enough evidence to determine the perpetrator of the attack.
Loyalty to the Mournery is stressed above all else, and stealing from the repository was call for strict punishment and expulsion. His teacher’s showed him no pity. Ilian resumed her courses soon, but Etron would never set foot in the classroom again.
Where many saw in Etron a callousness towards his peers and disdain for much of the world, the Mournery saw a desire for purpose - someone who could be used to accomplish the greater work of the Mournery.
Where Ilian would continue her work and become an acolyte of the Mournery and protect the dead from stages of beyond death, Etron would join the stronger arm of the Mournery. Driven by a fierce pride in his intelligence and ability to accomplish the tasks desired of him, he has quickly risen through the ranks of the Mournery. He rose to the position of peregrin in the Mournery, where he not only preserved the dead like his many pears, but also worked to find artifacts and lore of old.
After dispatching a horde of vessels in the small hamlets of Akeley and Wilmerth, Etron boarded a caravan to Carcosa, and from there received the order to retrieve the remaining three heart pieces of Molescere. The Mournery seeks to dominate the dead God of Rot’s avatar in order to halt the creation of vessels - or that is what they have told Etron.
His loyalty to the Mournery is no longer assured.
As Etron has ventured with the Blackstars he has grown to see the group as a second family, and one which cares for him more than that of the Mournery.
While still in its infancy, his investigation into the world during The Age of Apostesy has shown that even in a world without vessels there was strife.
His work in retrieving the heart pieces has him beginning to question the very motives of the Mournery. Will the Mournery’s designs with Molescere truly heal the world?
Etron’s Contract with Molescere has sparked the thought of surmounting the Mournery, but at what ends is unknown.
Dispatches concerning Etron:
A direct report to that of Pols Err, Overseer of Carcosa & its periphery: The task previously bestowed to me has been completed satisfactorily - the presence of vessels in the hamlets of Akeley and Wilmerth has been dealt with. Several instances of note occurred:
- Both locations are incredibly remote, each with an uncharacteristically large occurrence of vessel habitation.
- The hamlets are backwater, as are their inhabitants; their motivation and ingenuity lack in these locations.
- I know not how I came from a strain of standing similar to these domestics, but nurture & nature dance with each other - both with left feet in Akeley and Wilmerth.
- Improper burial was the cause of the vessel habitation, with a ‘nest’ located between both locations. It was dealt with expediently once I was made aware of it. Following this, proper rites, exhumations, and reburials were performed at each location publicly. I wish that these demonstrations may stymie the birth of these dishallowed creatures, but this hope is weak - I have seen men falter quickly without a firm hand to guide. Upon return to High-Brook news of my success traveled faster than I believed it would. I have heard other Peregrins (and those of higher standing than I) whisper behind my back and compliment me to my face for my ‘expediency’ and ‘professionalism’. I know they despise me. I have tasks at hand, and I will not lag behind like them - they lack my vision. It is an honor to have received instructions from the high council. I will make my way posthaste to the caravan south of Carcosa, and from there to the heart of The Mournery in the billows. I have heard the rumors of discovery there, and I know those scholars of the High-Brook college have always had their sights set upon the lost gods, as have I. Forever indebted to you, Recorded by Etron Aemon Valyr, Peregrin of High-Brook, sent through demi-raven.
A memorandum to be delivered to Alist Jin, Chief of Council, post-haste: I hope this letter finds you in reprieve - my condolences. The investigation is proceeding at pace. The land of Carcosa is rich of old blood and legend - that much is clear from the tales surrounding its saffron monarch. As previously discussed, the investigation is ongoing on the monarch and his Lords, the power they hold may speak to the region’s purported intimacy to the Flayed Corpse. Its left ventricle has been cleaned as instructed: one of the observers of the ritual (Phelun - the one of weak constitution) now reports a crowding of songs in her mind at night. Promising. We have made contact with that of Etron Aemon Valyr - the Peregrin dispatched from High-Brook. I see what you mean, he has a frigid countenance and a colder demeanor. Stories of his childhood made their way back to my memory upon hearing of his assignment. Sabotage of the other pupils was it? You say this attitude has been quieted, I believe it has been suppressed. His promise is undeniable, I cannot think of one with a greater hunger in his eyes. But ‘those who are ravenous are all-consuming’, he must be kept tight on his leash, an upset of the balance would be perilous in these delicate times. Valyr has been tasked with the retrieval of three remaining heart chambers. He will do well for us. Yours completely, Err Dictated by Pols Err, Overseer of Carcosa & its periphery. transcribed by the faithful Orson, scribe II.
